More rain expected this week

More heavy rain is expected for the area throughout today and Wednesday, but it is supposed to taper off Thursday into the weekend.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Col-umbia said they expect another inch of rain to add to the almost 5 inches that Augusta has seen in the last two days.

A flood watch has been issued for the Augusta area through Wednesday morning.

“Some storms will produce heavy rainfall,” meteorologist Tina Morrison said.

After the downpour Sunday, Richmond County sheriff’s deputies put up barricades to keep drivers out of flooded areas. When the barricades ran out, officers blocked areas with their cars.

Sharon Bennett, of Richmond County Emergency Management, said strong thunderstorms will spread to surrounding counties, including Screven, Jenkins and Allendale.

This week’s storm is capable of producing 40-50 mph winds, heavy rains and flooding in low-lying areas.

On Thursday, the chance of rain will drop to the lowest of the week, 30 percent.
