The public can learn more details about a proposed realignment of Berckmans Road with Alexander Drive at a 4 p.m. public meeting June 12 at Julian Smith Casino.
Design of the project was funded through Augusta’s last sales-tax allocation, although construction funding awaits voter approval July 31 on a referendum on the new regional 1 percent sales tax for transportation, Augusta Traffic Engineer Steve Cassell said.
“Different alignments are possible; (the meeting) is just to get the public’s input on it,” Cassell said. “For the most part, it’s to boost connectivity across Washington Road to River Watch Parkway.”
Berckmans, named for the plant nursery that became Augusta National Golf Club, formed the western boundary of the course until the National began acquiring land west of the road for additional patron parking.
The $20.3 million project – scheduled for completion in 2022 – would be included in Richmond County’s $277.5 million sales tax allocation to be collected over 10 years if the new tax is approved by voters July 31.
