Tim Spivey named deputy superintendent of Richmond County schools

Academy of Richmond County Principal Tim Spivey will become the next deputy superintendent of Richmond County schools as James Whitson moves into retirement.

Superintendent Frank Roberson chose Spivey from 14 applicants, and the Richmond County Board of Education approved the selection Wednesday at a called board meeting.

“It was something I was considering all year long,” Spivey said.

Spivey has 31 years of experience in Richmond County schools, including administrative and teaching positions at ARC, Tutt Middle and Westside High schools.

Board members voted unanimously to appoint Spivey as deputy superintendent, although they did not know the names of the other candidates before voting. The board was only presented with Roberson’s selection after the superintendent screened the candidates.

Roberson said he interviewed candidates from inside the system and from across the country. He said Spivey’s track record of success and evidence of student achievement steered his decision.

“He has a very impressive history of school leadership,” Roberson said. “The track record that he’s had in previous positions and his ability to elevate an organization, and having that set of qualifications in place just made it right.”

Whitson came to Richmond County in 2009 as deputy under then-Superintendent Dana Bedden. He served as acting superintendent for about two months after Bedden left for a job in Texas in June 2010 before Roberson was hired that August. He again took control of the district from February 2011 until early this year while Roberson was recovering from a brain condition.

In Roberson’s absence, Whitson helped steer the system through last year’s budget concerns, transportation issues and changes in state programs, including pre-kindergarten cuts.

“Tonight I realized I didn’t have to think about the next board meeting,” Whitson said. “And that was strange.”
