A suspect has been captured in Florida after a man was fatally shot and his wife injured last night outside a Martinez church.
Columbia County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said Daniel Nelson Robinson, 21, of Jacksonville, was taken into custody in his hometown this morning.
Last night, Morris said, a man was fatally shot and his wife injured outside Marvin United Methodist Church at Wheeler and Belair roads.
About 10:39 p.m., deputies responded to the church and found the man dead on scene, according to Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins. He identified the victim was William Rountree DaVitte, 55, of Martinez.
Deputies from Richmond and Columbia counties were initially searching for two suspects, but later said it was just one. He was believed to be in the victim’s vehicle, a 2010 gold Nissan Murano.
“The husband and wife were here at the church to activate the sprinkler system,” Columbia County Capt. Steve Morris said. “The husband was shot fatally and the wife has been transported to (Georgia Regents Medical Center) to receive treatment.”
Deputies initially believed the woman had been shot, but later said she was injured. She was later released.
Morris said incidents of this magnitude are “extremely uncommon” in this area of Columbia County.
“Very rare,” Morris said. “I’m not sure of the circumstances or what led up to this. It’s still very early in the investigation and we hope to find out what happened very soon.”
Morris is unsure if the victims are members of Marvin United Methodist Church.
“All I know is they were here to activate the sprinkler system,” Morris confirmed.
