Former Pennsylvania politician claims mistreatment in South Carolina prison

SCRANTON, Pa. — Attorneys for former Pennsylvania state Sen. Robert J. Mellow say he was mistreated at a federal prison in South Carolina while serving time stemming from a corruption case.

The 70-year-old Mellow, one-time top Democrat in the state Senate, pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to commit mail fraud. Prosecutors say his staff worked on taxpayer-paid time on a range of political campaign activities in 2006.

His attorneys told a federal judge Mellow was denied the right to shower and communicate with them while being held at the Federal Correctional Institution-Williamsburg in South Carolina. Assistant U.S. Attorney Fran Sempa told the judge he spoke with the warden, who assured him Mellow wasn’t treated differently than any other inmate.

The (Scranton) Times-Tribune reports Mellow was transferred last week to the federal prison in Jesup, Ga.
