Operation Smoke Screen down to two suspects at large

Only two of 116 Operation Smoke Screen suspects remain at large after two more were picked up this week.

Richmond County authorities booked 23-year-old Marquell James Washington into the Richmond County jail Monday and booked 19-year-old Carl Mingledolph on Wednesday.

Smoke Screen ended Feb. 28, seven months after undercover officers began operating Cheap Cigarettes II, a pawnshop that had previously been operating illegally on Peach Orchard Road. Through the operation, the sheriff’s office was able to identify 116 burglary suspects accused of selling stolen merchandise to undercover officers at the store.

The sheriff’s office has been booking suspects into jail since the operation ended, with 77 suspects caught the first day.

Deputies are still searching for David Anthony Owens, 19, and Jamel Antoine Cooper, 23.
