A Florida man is dead and an Augusta man is in custody after a robbery and a late-night shootout over drugs, police said Wednesday.
Walter Foster Jr., 36, of St. Petersburg, Fla., was pronounced dead from a chest wound at 11:59 p.m. at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose said.
According to a description of the incident provided by Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Blaise Dresser, deputies were called to the 3800 block of Shari Street not far from Deans Bridge Road late Tuesday.
They found Kenyatta Moorehead, 33, who lives at the address, with a gunshot wound to the knee. They also found Foster with a fatal wound.
Police believe Foster and Michael Brown, 28, of the 2900 block of Ulm Road, Rosetown Trailer Park, went to Moorehead’s home to purchase illegal drugs.
While there, the two assailants robbed Moorehead at gunpoint. They took jewelry and were seeking additional items when he fought back. During the struggle, shots were fired and Brown fled.
Deputies believe Moorehead and Foster continued fighting over a handgun, and Moorehead was shot in the knee and Foster was shot in the chest. Moorehead was taken to MCG for treatment. Foster was also taken to the hospital and died shortly before midnight.
Investigators later found Brown, who is being held in the Richmond County jail on charges of armed robbery, possession of a firearm during a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, theft by receiving stolen property and felony murder in connection with Foster’s death, according to Dresser’s statement.
Foster’s death was Richmond County’s 14th homicide of the year.
