Authorities said Sunday they hope an autopsy will determine if a badly decomposed body found over the weekend in Aiken County is Melody Boughman, 56, a woman reported missing last month.
Capt. Troy Elwell, of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, said the autopsy was scheduled Monday morning at state facilities in Newberry, S.C.
Boughman’s husband, who was not named, found a woman’s remains about 12:30 p.m. Saturday in a heavily wooded area off the 1000 block of Double Springs Road, Elwell said. The body was too badly decomposed to either identify or determine a cause of death, Elwell said.
According to police, Boughman was last seen by her husband at their home April 20. At the time, police believed the woman left the residence on foot without money, identification or medicine for an undisclosed medical condition after a fight with her husband.
Authorities also thought she had her husband’s .22-caliber pistol with her.
