Fort barracks evacuated this morning

Fake mortar rounds from the 1960s and World War II were uncovered Monday night and Tuesday morning at Fort Gordon, prompting a brief evacuation of nearby barracks.

The rounds,

about 10 inches long each, were discovered while digging a sewer trench along Lane Avenue, between 31st and 28th streets. Buildings 28425 and 28430 were evacuated until a bomb disposal team from Fort Jackson confirmed the explosives were dummies.

Soldiers were allowed back to the barracks and Lane Avenue was reopened. The rounds were collected and destroyed by the Fort Jackson team.
