Richmond County deputy run over; man arrested

A deputy was taken to the hospital Thursday night after he was run over during a traffic stop.

According to Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Blaise Dresser, deputies saw a man at Smart Grocery, 3221 Wrighsboro Road, behaving suspiciously about 10 p.m. and stopped their vehicles behind the man’s Chevrolet Impala.

The driver, identified as 29-year-old Kimmie Gresham Jr., put the vehicle in reverse. Dresser said the Impala knocked Deputy Dale Roberts to the ground and ran over his legs.

The car left the scene, dragging passenger Michael Cheatham 10 to 15 feet, and then hit two cruisers before crashing into a bush at Magnolia Drive and Pine Needle Road near an entrance to Forest Hills Golf Club.

Gresham continued on foot but was soon apprehended. Officers found he had marijuana at the time of the arrest.

Roberts was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital and was released without injuries.

Gresham was booked into the Richmond County Jail on two counts of aggravated assault of a police officer, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, two counts of interference with government property, driving while license suspended or revoked, suspended vehicle registration, reckless driving, and fleeing or attempting to elude an officer.

Cheatham was booked on charges of misdemeanor possession of marijuana but has been released on bond.
