Woman held at Edgefield County Detention Center hangs herself

A woman hanged herself with a sheet in Edgefield County Detention Center Friday.

Edgefield County’s Deputy Coroner, David Burnett, said Ashley Marie Williams, 26, died from asphyxia due to hanging. The toxicology report is still pending from an autopsy that was performed Saturday morning.

Williams, from the 100 block of Cooper Loop in North Augusta, was found in her cell and sent to Edgefield County Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Friday.

According to Edgefield County records, Williams was arrested on Sept. 30 for possession of marijuana or hash. Williams also pled guilty to second degree burglary in December of 2006.
