Fire set to avoid mortgage, police say

An Augusta man will have to wait in jail for his trial on a charge of first-degree arson.

Jerry Green Harris was denied bond Friday after his arrest Sept. 11 on allegations that he had his house set on fire to get out of a mortgage. Firefighters called law enforcement around 3 a.m. that day after determining that a house fire on Dickey Road looked suspicious.

Deputies said it looked as though the house had been ransacked and that several fires had been intentionally been set. Their suspicions turned to Harris when they found jewelry, electronics and other family property in his car.

Harris reportedly admitted that he had hired two men to set his house on fire to avoid his mortgage.
