Qualifying period for Augusta Commission, Richmond County Board of Education next week

Tucked between the Tuesday primary and Aug. 21 runoff will be the qualifying period for 10 local races, which was postponed earlier this year by a federal judge.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Monday and running through noon Wednesday, candidates seeking to run for Augusta City Commission or Richmond County Board of Education can qualify to run for the posts at the Board of Elections Office, 530 Greene St. Room 104.

The fee to qualify is $360 for commission and $100 for school board. All 10 posts are nonpartisan.

The offices coming open include commission districts 1, 3, 5 and 7 and Super District 9. The only sitting commissioners not term-limited and free to seek the posts again are District 1 Commissioner Matt Aitken and District 5 Commissioner Bill Lockett.

The five school board posts up for election in November are districts 1, 4, 5, 8 and 10, which are currently represented by Marion Barnes, Barbara Pulliam, Patsy Scott, Jimmy Atkins and Helen Minchew.
