Augusta man pleads guilty in child abuse case

A 24-year-old Augusta man who left his 6-year-old with cuts and bruises after she brought home a bad school report pleaded guilty Tuesday to cruelty to children.

George Pacheco admitted in Richmond County Superior Court that he whipped the child with a belt on May 6.

Judge Daniel J. Craig sentenced Pacheco to seven years probation under the First Offender Act but warned Pacheco any future violation of a law, especially if it involved a child, would mean a prison term of as long as 20 years. Craig promised the same punishment if anyone tried to cover up such criminal act.

Pacheco completed an anger management course as a condition of his bond. On Tuesday, Craig ordered Pacheco to perform 300 hours of community service as a condition of probation. He also has 120 days to complete the process to legitimize his four children.
