Inmate takes pickup, escapes work detail

A state prison inmate stole a pickup and fled from a work detail near Thomson on Monday morning.

McDuffie County sheriff's Maj. Ronnie Williamson said Tommy Ray Woodruff, 30, of Cherokee County, Ga., is white, 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 165 pounds. He has short brown hair and green eyes and was last seen driving a 2006 Chevrolet 1500.

The truck, which belongs to the McDuffie County Roads and Bridges Department, was stolen from a work detail about 10:45 a.m. Monday, according to sheriff's Investigator Larry Adaway.

Woodruff was most recently convicted of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of methamphetamine and forgery in the first degree, Williamson said.
