Krispy Kreme to reopen Tuesday

Krispy Kreme will reopen on Washington Road on Tuesday after nearly two months of interior renovations.

“We wanted to open up before the Masters, but us opening up during Masters Week is exciting to us,” said Aisha Knox, a shift supervisor.

The shop at 2866 Washington Road closed Feb. 18 so the interior could be gutted.

The new layout allows customers to watch doughnuts being made, Knox said.

The building’s exterior received a fresh coat of paint, additional landscaping and a new drive-through menu, Knox said.

The Krispy Kreme corporation, which re-acquired the Augusta franchise from local owners in August, updated it to reflect the company’s design for its newer stores.

Jefferson EMC chief steps down

The head of Jefferson Energy Cooperative retired March 31.

President and CEO Kenneth Cook, a University of Georgia graduate, took over the co-op in 1996 and served there for a decade as an engineering manager, according to a Jefferson Energy news release.

Cook became involved with the co-op program as a board member for Little Ocmulgee EMC in Alamo, Ga., when he also served as a representative on Oglethorpe Power Corp.’s board of directors.

Cook is credited with
reorganizing the co-op’s corporate structure, construction of a headquarters facility in Wrens and making the co-op function more efficiently.

Home sales post gains in February

WASHINGTON — U.S. home prices jumped in February by the largest amount in seven years, evidence that the housing recovery strengthened ahead of the all-important spring buying season.

Home prices rose 10.2 percent in February compared with a year earlier, CoreLogic, a real estate data provider, said Wednesday. The annual gain was the biggest since March 2006. Prices have increased on an annual basis for 12 straight months, underscoring the recovery’s steady momentum.

The gains were broad-based. Prices rose in 47 of 50 states and in all but four of the nation’s 100 largest metro areas.

Delaware, Alabama and Illinois were the only states to report price declines.
