Local bankers Phil Wahl, Richard Fairey take on new roles

Two Augusta banking industry leaders have new positions.

Phil Wahl is now Augusta market president of Savannah River Banking Co., and Richard Fairey is the community bank executive for Regions Bank.
Wahl replaces David Hogg, who has taken a new role at Savannah River Banking as the director of business development. Previously, Wahl served as Augusta city president at First Citizens Bank.

Fairey was the community banking market president at Regions Financial Corp., where he was responsible for 28 counties, including the Augusta, Athens, Savannah and Aiken markets.

After 26 years in Augusta’s financial industry, Wahl said he wanted to work with a company with more of a local focus. Savannah River Banking has its main office in Augusta and a branch in Aiken.

Until now, Wahl had worked mostly for “large organizations that report outside of Augusta.” He started his new job in June.

“I felt like it was a great opportunity to remain focused on where my passion is. Augusta is my passion,” Wahl said. “It gave me an opportunity to be a part of a local team to provide hands-on service to my existing and future clients and the ability to make decisions here locally, those things you have the opportunity to do as a community bank.”

For Fairey, a 27-year veteran of the banking industry, his new position supports the entire state of Georgia, excluding Atlanta. He’s been on the job for about three months.

The job is based out of Atlanta, and he oversees all of the commercial loans and deposits that are driven by the market presidents.

“I support all of the market presidents in the state within the community bank,” Fairey said. “For me based out of Augusta, it’s a great compliment for them to think of me to do a bigger role to support the state.”

Fairey works from an Atlanta office for two or three days and is in Augusta for the rest of the week. He must travel to Atlanta because support staff and partners for the bank are based there, he said.

“I knew when I accepted the position that was a component of it. I’m glad to do it,” Fairey said. “It’s nice to get out and see venues and opportunities within the state itself. That’s a big key to really understand the markets. When you’re trying to drive business, you just can’t drive it from Atlanta. You’ve got to be really in the markets to understand what’s trying to be accomplished.”
