Salon leaves downtown Augusta after 20 years

Not strangers to giving a makeover, the owners of La Dolce Vita have renovated a former Augusta dental office into a new home for their spa and salon.

After two decades downtown, Kyle and Meredith Tompkins moved the business to 1208 George C. Wilson Drive, off Wheeler Road, on Aug. 6 after a three-week overhaul.

La Dolce Vita had been at 1141 Broad St. for 20 years before closing July 30. When the building’s plumbing quit for the third time this year, just before a busy Memorial Day weekend, the couple made a last-minute decision to vacate the building for good.

“You’ll actually go out of business if you don’t have proper plumbing in this spa/salon environment,” Meredith Tompkins said. “We put so much of our own money into that place fixing it up.”

She also said clients and the salon’s 14 staffers were finding it increasingly difficult to find street parking.

The new spot, near Doctors Hospital, already had plumbing set up in each room, and the space has been opened up for a modern, urban feel, Tompkins said.

Though some clients felt the salon moved too far away, Tompkins said many have been receptive to the change.

“It’s convenient and there’s parking,” she said. “It’s totally a makeover for everyone, for our employees, for our clients.”
