Augusta foreclosure filings decline in February

The number of foreclosure filings in the Augusta metro area declined from January to February, according to the monthly report from online real estate market RealtyTrac.

There were 378 filings in February for the six-county area, down from 396 in January. The number is higher than February 2011, when there were 361 notices.

Foreclosure filings – default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions – were reported on 206,900 U.S. properties in February.

“February’s numbers point to a gradually rising foreclosure tide as some of the barriers that have been holding back foreclosures are removed,” said Brandon Moore, CEO of RealtyTrac. “Although national foreclosure activity was pushed lower by decreases in a handful of larger states, 21 states posted annual increases in foreclosure activity.”

Georgia ranked fourth in the nation with 12,356 filings, a rate of one for every 331 households. South Carolina is eighth with a rate of one for every 489 households, with 4,373 filings last month.
