The Sears store in the Aiken Mall will close in late April, corporate representatives confirmed Wednesday.
“This store is being closed because the lease was not renewed,” said Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holdings. “Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base and accelerate the transformation of our business model.”
A liquidation sale will begin at the store on Feb. 7. Riefs said in an emailed response that the Sears store in the Augusta Mall will remain open.
There are 54 employees at the Aiken Mall Sears store and auto center. Riefs said eligible associates would receive severance and be able to apply for open positions at other area Sears or Kmart stores. Kmart is a subsidiary of Sears Holdings.
The Aiken Mall is located at 2441 Whiskey Road.
After undergoing foreclosure in 2013, ownership of the Aiken Mall property went back to the lending bank, U.S. Bank National Association, in September.
