Sonic Spotlight: Drew Davis

Andrew Davis Tucker/Staff
Retired Evans High School math teacher Drew Davis of Martinez, Ga is now playing country music on his Vantage acoustic/electric guitar.

HOMETOWN: Martinez

AGE: 53

SCHOOL: Retired Evans High School algebra and trigonometry teacher

PLAYS: Pictured with his Vantage acoustic/electric guitar

MOST MEMORABLE CONCERT: Waylon Jennings at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center, late 1970s. "The whole night, there was a couple behind us who were singing every song that was said, every line that came through; and every now and then, you could hear these bottles clanking ... so you could tell that they were having a very good time, so much so that the husband had to grab the wife by the waist and pull her up to take her out."

MOST MEMORABLE PERFOR-MANCE: Hopeland Gardens in Aiken, mid-1980s. "It's hot, there is no amplification. And within the first three words of the first line of my very first song, a leaf falls down off the tree and wedges in the collar of my shirt ... and the guitar strap pops right about that same time, so I'm standing there with my elbow holding the guitar trying to stand and sing, all the while just about being drowned out by a chorus of cicadas."

PRE-SHOW RITUAL: "Before the show, I try to go to a nice private place and do the first line ... make sure my voice is clear and ready to go."

HANDPICKED CONCERT LINEUP: Kris Kristofferson, Sunday Morning Coming Down; Hank Williams Jr., Lost Highway; Merle Haggard, Today I Started Loving You Again; Johnny Cash, I Still Miss Someone; and Chris Isaak, Wicked Game

NEXT GIG: Mr. Davis will perform from 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Borders Books Music Movies & Cafe.
