Musicians keep Glenn Miller sound alive

It’s been almost 75 years since the Glenn Miller Orchestra’s debut. A group of modern-day musicians, however, are still sharing the group’s signature big band sound with audiences.

On March 17, The Glenn Miller Orchestra will appear at the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center in Evans in a concert presented by Augusta Amusements. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the music starts at 7. Tickets start at $30 from augusta
amusements.tix.com or (706) 726-0366.

The present-day orchestra was formed in 1956, 12 years after Miller’s death.

Nick Hilscher, an Atlanta native, took over as music director in January.

“It’s a fun show,” said Hilscher, who got his start with the group as a vocalist.

There are 19 members: five saxophonists, four trombonists, four trumpeters, a piano player, bassist, drummer, vocalists, and Hilscher. They spend about 48 weeks of the year on the road, playing about 300 shows.

“I fell in love with this music when I was 12 years old,” Hilscher said. “I started listening and developing my musical talents around it. I always loved music growing up, but this really changed my life.”

Most of the musicians are attracted to the unique combinations of melody, harmony and rhythm found in big band music, Hilscher said.

“There’s nothing else like it,” he said. “It’s going to be a really exciting show.”
