sami.the.great finds her way to Augusta

sami.the.great will play music from her new self-titled album at The Soul Bar on March 7.

It’s no surprise that as a songwriter Sami Akbari would find inspiration in heartbreak.

The Iranian-American singer performs under the moniker sami.the.great and returns to Augusta on a national tour of her new self-titled album at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at The Soul Bar, 984 Broad St. Admission is $3. Call (706) 724-8880 or see

The album, however, isn’t about the kind of broken heart that most people assume.

“It doesn’t necessarily have to do with relationships,” she said. “A big one for me is growing up and grieving my childhood.”

Several songs are about struggling in the world and finding her way, said Akbari, 28. She recorded the album near her Brooklyn home last summer.

“So far this is the best album reviews I’ve received. It’s exciting,” she said. “Even critics that are hard to crack have been eyeing it.”

Crowds have also been receiving the album well as Akbari travels down the East Coast.

“I like to put on a show. I like to be entertaining at any moment possible,” Akbari said.

While her new album is full of light and bright indie-pop songs, Akbari said she hopes many will strike a deeper chord with listeners.

“If I can get you in that mode where you’re thinking about things and relating to things on an emotional level, that’s what I want to do, but I don’t want it to be such a drag. We’ll have fun with it.”
