Charges will be filed in collision

Morgan Renew: Barnwell native was studying nursing at the University of South Carolina Beaufort.

A Barnwell County native, who was going to turn 19 next month, won't get to continue her studies to be a nurse.

Morgan Renew, 18, who was living in Bluffton, S.C., died at an Augusta hospital after two sport utility vehicles collided Friday evening on Washington Road near Thurmond Lake.

Renew was the only person killed in the wreck that sent 12 other people to Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

Renew, a 2010 graduate of Barnwell High School, was attending the University of South Carolina Beaufort.

She was partially ejected from a 2006 Ford Explorer after a collision with a 1992 Jeep Cherokee near Appling, according to Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris.

As of Saturday evening, five people in the accident were still hospitalized and the rest had been discharged from MCG.

According to Morris, the Jeep was driven by Angel Herrin, 34, of the 700 block of Bennock Mill Road, Augusta, and was headed east on Washington Road shortly before 9 p.m. The Explorer, driven by Kristine Heath, 35, of the 2200 block of Dartmouth Court, Augusta, was traveling south on Ridge Road.

Heath failed to stop for a stop sign and traveled in front of the Jeep, Morris said. The Jeep hit the right side of the Explorer, causing it to overturn.

Morris said charges against Heath are pending. As of Saturday evening, Morris did not have additional details about the wreck, including information about seat belt use.

Two passengers from Heath's vehicle were still hospitalized Saturday.

Jamie Whitehead, 33, of Warrenville, was in serious condition, according to a hospital spokesperson. Brian Whitehead, 31, of Warrenville, was in fair condition.

One passenger of the Jeep, Marshall Herrin, 36, was still listed in critical condition Saturday night.

Angel Herrin, 34, the driver, and passenger, Brittany Herrin, 9, were listed in serious condition.

Renew, who was riding in the rear of the Explorer, died at the hospital of blunt impact injuries, Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins said.

Funeral services for Renew will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Barnwell First Baptist Church.
