Ultimate Frisbee returns to Aiken in March

AIKEN --- Aiken Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department has a new sport to offer, thanks to an Aiken high school junior.

The department offered its first Ultimate Frisbee league in December, and South Aiken High student Dylan Gunnels is determined to bring the sport back in March.

"I just thought if other cities are doing it, why can't we?" said Dylan, 17.

The then-16-year-old contacted parks director Glenn Parker last summer, got about 65 friends and classmates signed up for the league and bought Frisbee discs for the monthlong season.

It's rare that the recreation department starts a league at a resident's request, said Seth Holley, the athletic coordinator. He helped organize the schedule and game nights at Citizens Park last month.

"People come up and ask, but that's the first that I know of that we've run a league from someone asking," Holley said.

"We do need more activities for people in his age group. We have a lot for adults and kids, but there's really nothing for the young adults."

The hardest part of organizing the league was teaching everybody the game, Dylan said.

Though Augusta started a league a while ago, few people are familiar with the game.

He describes it as football with a Frisbee disc and no officiating.

"It's appealing to me because it's a fun sport with a lot of running," he said. "It's very sportsmanlike, and everybody who played in the first league really enjoyed it."

Dylan said he hopes he can get more players by late February so that several Ultimate Frisbee teams can face off at Citizens Park in March.

Holley said he looks forward to helping Dylan continue the sport in Aiken.

"If there's enough interest and enough folks signed up, we'll be glad to start it up in the spring," he said. "We didn't know much about the game when it started, but now I see that people really enjoy it."
