Man says passenger stole $3,900 from him


A 62-year-old Augusta man told Richmond County deputies that he had $3,900 stolen from his truck on Thursday by a man he had given a ride.

According to a Richmond County sheriff's report, the man said he was approached at the Tractor Supply Company at 596 Bobby Jones Expressway by a man who asked for a ride. The man rode with the driver to the Walgreens at 3228 Wrightsboro Road and then to the Wachovia Bank at 3430 Wrightsboro Road. When they got to the bank, the driver told the passenger to get out of the vehicle. The driver then went inside a nearby Burger King for a drink. When he came out of the restaurant, he saw the right door of his truck was open and the passenger was running away.

Men serving time for manslaughter paroled

Two Augustans serving prison terms for manslaughter in unrelated killings are being paroled. The State Board of Pardons and Paroles notified local authorities that Rodriquez Santez Nelson and Johnny Bariel Brown are scheduled to be released Jan. 20 and Jan. 19, respectively.

Unoccupied home is damaged in blaze

Fire damaged an unoccupied Appling home Thursday. Martinez-Columbia Fire Firefighters called to 7133 Postell Drive, near Dozier Road, found the house in flames. Much of it had collapsed by the time the blaze was brought under control.

Man shot outside of apartment complex

A shooting outside an Augusta apartment complex sent one man to the hospital Thursday night. According to a Richmond County Sheriff's Department dispatcher, a man was shot in the stomach about about 6:45 p.m. at Westchester Apartments at 2905 Arrowhead Drive. The victim was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, a dispatcher said.
