Woman dies after being stabbed at Cherry Tree

 

A woman died Tuesday after being stabbed during a fight in the Cherry Tree Crossing housing project, and the Richmond County Sheriff's Office said it has another woman in custody as a suspect.

Lt. Scott Peebles said Courtney Smith, 18, is facing a murder charge in the death of Melissa House, 21, of Blakeley Street. The incident occurred after 3 p.m. inside a home on the 1400 block of Tobias Court, and the victim was pronounced dead at Medical College of Georgia Hospital at 3:25 p.m., Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald said.

"All I can tell you is she had multiple stab wounds on the left side of her body," he said.

Underwood concert sold out quickly

The May 2 Carrie Underwood performance at the James Brown Arena sold out in less than 25 minutes, according to reports presented Tuesday at Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority meeting.

"This is the fastest I've ever seen," Monty Jones, general manager of the James Brown Arena, said of the ticket sales.

About 5,700 seats were available for the concert, according to Mr. Jones.

The authority also discussed ways it could express its gratitude to the community for turnout and ticket sales.

"We need to let (the community) know that we thank them for coming out," said Cedric Johnson, the chairman of the authority.

Burglar killed; police seek man's next of kin

A man who police say was trying to break into a home on Augusta's Sixth Avenue on Tuesday was shot to death.

The dead man was tentatively identified as Charles Rodriquez Harris, 41, with no known address. The Richmond County Coroner's Office said in a statement it is trying to notify any of his next of kin.

Arrest records indicate that he might also have been known as Marquet Jones.

Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten said an autopsy showed he died of a gunshot wound to the back and abdomen.

Sheriff's Lt. Scott Peebles said the man was shot when he tried to break into the home in the 1000 block of Sixth Avenue shortly after 9 a.m. Police questioned and then released a person in connection with the incident, he said.

Intruders take man's flat-screen TV, Xbox

An Augusta man told Richmond County police Tuesday that he was robbed in his apartment at gunpoint after two men knocked on his door.

The incident occurred just after midnight Tuesday, according to a Richmond County sheriff's incident report. The man told authorities the men barged into his home in the 3100 block of Skinner Mill Road after knocking on the door. One man held a gun to his head while the other removed a flat-screen television and Xbox game system.

The items are valued at $2,250, according to the report.

The two were described as black and in their early 20s. They were dressed entirely in black and were wearing ski masks.
