Bond denied for 3 of 5 arrested in drug search

Five people arrested in a south Augusta home where narcotics investigators seized several ounces of cocaine and a number of weapons appeared in court Friday for bond hearings.

Based on their prior drug convictions, Senior Judge Bernard J. Mulherin Sr. denied bond for Kendrick A. Redfield, 30; Travis L. Shubert, 25; and Stevonn C. Payne, 21. He set $60,000 bonds for Latrell D. Shubert, 21, and Dantrell Crutcher, 22.

On Dec. 2, narcotics investigators executed a search warrant at a home in the 3100 block of Old McDuffie Road where a confidential source reported that a man known as "Brito" was selling cocaine. On Friday, Assistant District Attorney Rex Myers told the judge in Richmond County Superior Court that officers found powder and crack cocaine in the kitchen and in a bedroom. They also found eight handguns and rifles. Three of the confiscated weapons had been stolen, one reportedly in Las Vegas, Mr. Myers said.

The officers found 134 grams, nearly 5 ounces, of cocaine, Mr. Myers said. According to the search warrant, officers also confiscated $709 in cash, $260 in money orders and digital scales.

None of the accused lived at the Old McDuffie Road home, defense attorneys told the judge. The search warrant and related court documents do not include information about who lived in the home.

Mr. Redfield, Travis Shubert and Mr. Payne are all on probation for felony crimes. The Drug Enforcement Administration in Savannah, Ga., also has a 2008 case involving Travis Shubert, the prosecutor said Friday.

Mr. Payne had pleaded guilty in Richmond County Superior Court last month. Aggravated assault charges were dropped to criminal damage to property and trespass in connection with a November 2006 shooting at the Jennings Home apartment complex. He was sentenced to four years' probation on Nov. 24.

According to earlier reports in The Augusta Chronicle, sheriff's investigators believed the shooting was a gang-related incident. No one was wounded.
