Survivor: Georgette Magwood

FAMILY: Daughter, Chaundra, 38; granddaughter, Anna, 14

OCCUPATION: Retired principal and educator of 36 years

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT: April 4, 1989; mastectomy of left breast, Tamoxifen treatments

Ms. Magwood never wanted to look sick when she went through her experience with breast cancer. She wanted to be strong when friends or family asked how she was doing.

"I wanted to say, 'Look at me, I'm looking good,' " she said.

She quotes Psalm 23, " ... even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death."

"It says we're going through it, not that we'll stay in it," she said.

After she was cancer free, she spent five years counseling others. In February 2008, her daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer. Ms. Magwood told her daughter that she, too, would get through it. They often prayed to God together.

"If he did it for me, he would do it for her," she said.

Don't associate with people who doubt that you will get well: "People can destroy what you believe," she said.
