Oversized load will cause road closures in area

The generator and special carrier are 23 feet tall, 28 feet wide and 300 feet long. Each rig has 18 axles and the carrier has more than 100 tires. When it moves, it crawls at 5 to 20 mph.

An oversized tractor-trailer will roll through Barnwell County in the next several days.

The generator and the special heavy duty carrier it's being transported on are 23 feet tall, 28 feet wide and 300 feet long, with each rig having 18 axles and the carrier more than 100 tires.

The shipment is being transported to an undisclosed location in North Carolina. Because of confidentiality agreements by Mammoet, the transportation company moving the device, few details about it were given, said Roger Riley, the Barnwell County Emergency Management director.

When stopped, the generator will have area police guarding it, he said.

Local officials from the counties the shipment will pass through have been alerted.

The power generator and transport rig weigh 1.89 million pounds, according to a South Carolina Department of Transportation news release.

The shipment will cause some road blockages and detours as it moves at speeds between 5 and 20 mph.

The shipment entered Barnwell County on Wednesday afternoon and will sit on Old Allendale Highway until Saturday when it will move again over the weekend, Mr. Riley said.

Once the shipment leaves Barnwell, it will connect with U.S. 78 and head into Aiken County. The device will pass through the counties of Jasper, Allendale, Barnwell, Hampton, Aiken, Edgefield, Saluda, Greenwood, Laurens, Spartanburg and Greenville on its 30-day journey to North Carolina, according to the DOT news release.
