A night up on the roof

Hartley Gibbons, principal of Terrace Manor Elementary School, challenged the school's third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders in December to reach the proficiency level in math on the Benchmark III test—a test done in preparation for the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test. If they reached the level, Mr. Gibbons would then spend one night on the school's roof for each grade that achieved the proficiency level.

The fifth-graders fulfilled the challenge requirements after taking the test in March, obtaining the second highest percentage of students at the proficiency level, behind C.T. Walker Elementary School.

Upholding his end of the deal, Mr. Gibbons spent the night (from 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to 8:30 a.m. April 23) on the school's roof doing work.
