The District Attorney's Office filed a criminal accusation Wednesday against a man whose SUV struck and killed a kindergarten teacher walking beside a highway last summer.
District Attorney Ashley Wright said Brandon Wise, 24, of Evans, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, traveling too fast for conditions and having improper windshield tint, all misdemeanors. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $1,000 fine, Ms. Wright said.
Mr. Wise was driving a Ford Expedition south on Mullikin Road in Evans about 9 p.m. July 16 when it struck Christian Giles, 24, who was walking her dogs with her husband.
Mrs. Giles, a kindergarten teacher at Augusta's John Milledge Elementary School, died from a head injury, said Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins.
Mrs. Giles was walking on the shoulder of the road, her husband, Auburn Giles, told authorities. The site of the collision was near their home on Sawbuck Way.
Mr. Wise told police he didn't see Mrs. Giles until it was too late to avoid hitting her, said Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris.
Since the accident, Columbia County has constructed a sidewalk along Mullikin Road, and the county is planning to install streetlights.
