Benefit concert kicks off fundraiser

You can begin today to help bring a brighter Christmas to many in our community through the efforts of The Augusta Chronicle's annual Empty Stocking Fund.

An important source of its fundraising is the annual Empty Stocking Benefit Concert, which will be held at 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Augusta, 3500 Walton Way.

It will feature a performance by the Augusta Concert Band.

The concert is free, but a collection will be taken to benefit the fund.

Last year, the seasonal charity, begun by the newspaper in 1930, raised $123,457.63, which helped 1,776 families -- 6,645 individuals -- during the 2007 holiday.

The deadline for returning applications for help is Dec. 12.

The newspaper covers the costs of administering the charity so that all donations from individuals, organizations and businesses go directly to those who need it.

Many single parents and caregivers unable to provide medicine and treatment for their children depend of the charity.
