EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the first in a series of articles following Scott and Renee Dean and their family, which has expanded with the adoption of five Guatemalan children.
After more than two hours of waiting, Lee Ann Meyer spotted her brother-in-law.
"There they are," she yelled.
Family and friends raced with open arms to greet the Dean family as they made their way into the airport terminal in Atlanta. Renee Dean trailed with a video camera in hand and tears in her eyes. After almost three years, her family was finally all together, and finally home.
Scott and Mrs. Dean, of Harlem, and their two sons, Anthony, 12, and Meyer, 8, returned home from Guatemala with the five newest members of their family: Marlin, 15; Silda, 14; Sindy, 11; Mimi, 6; and Byron, 4.
Mr. Dean met two of the older children on a mission trip in 2004. When he returned the following year, he met their siblings.
"I came home and told Renee that it was a calling. That's not really a word I've ever used before. But this was one of those moments that I felt like this is what we're supposed to do." Mr. Dean said.
