Board OKs school rezoning proposal

Ninety-three eighth-graders in three parts of Columbia County will be rezoned to different high schools a year ahead of schedule.

School board members plan to hold public hearings and finalize a complete high school rezoning plan this spring to prepare for the 2009 opening of Grovetown High School on Chamblin Road.

But the school board gave final approval Tuesday to a plan to rezone those who will be in the ninth grade in pocket areas around Flowing Wells, Hereford Farm and Louisville roads for 2008-09.

The rezoning will shift these students to the high schools they will attend once the more comprehensive rezoning takes place. The rezoning, which is mandatory, will allow freshmen to attend the same high school for four years.

"I think it makes sense if we know they're going there the following year," said board member Wayne Bridges.

The board also tentatively approved a proposal to give upperclassmen who live in these areas the option of transferring to their new schools next year. This proposal would affect 108 10th-graders and 90 11th-graders.

The board approved both measures by a 4-0 vote. Board member Mike Sleeper was absent.

Mr. Nagle said no exceptions would be made for ninth-graders who would have older siblings at a different high school.

"They're at different schools this year," he said. "If it's a transportation issue, that child can ride a bus."

Anyone with questions about the rezoning plan can call the county school board's main office at (706) 541-0650.
