Girl couldn't wait for due date

Martinez resident Lina Wilson rang in the new year by giving birth to Augusta's first baby of 2008.

Penelope Nicole was born at 3:18 a.m. Tuesday at Doctors Hospital, weighing 7 pounds 9 ounces and measuring 211/4 inches in length.

She wasn't due until Jan. 10. Her father, Ted Wilson, took the news in stride that his daughter was the first local baby to be born this year.

"It's just another day," he said.

Big sister Camila, 6, looked on proudly as her mother cradled her baby sibling in her arms.

"I kissed her," Camila said. "I give her a hug."

The kindergartner looks forward to her new role as an older sister.

"When we are bigger, I carry her," she said.

In Aiken County, the first baby of 2008 was born at Aiken Regional Medical Centers to Vicki Trowell, of Lexington, S.C., at 1:24 a.m. Her daughter, Destini Marielle, who was not due until Jan. 24, was 173/4 inches long and weighed 4 pounds 4.5 ounces.

Ms. Trowell had been in Aiken visiting her parents, Earldell and Leon Trowell, since Sunday.

"I grew up in Aiken, so I wanted to have my baby down here where my family was," she said.
