School budget cuts by department

Lake Forest Hills Elementary School fifth-graders worked on one of the Augusta school's aging computers in November.

Most systemwide departments endured 10 percent cuts to their operating budgets. These budgets don't include personnel. The following is a list of departments sorted according to the amount of money cut:

EDUCATIONAL MEDIA -- TECHNOLOGY

EVENING SCHOOL

WHAT WILL IT INCLUDE? Toilet tissue and paper towels

FINE ARTS

WHAT WILL IT INCLUDE? Band instruments for Tutt Middle, Cross Creek High, John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet and T.W. Josey High and the repair and replacement of instruments countywide

GUIDANCE

TOTAL AMOUNT CUT: $53,780

WHAT WILL IT INCLUDE? Administering the Otis-Lennon School Ability Index, a test to identify gifted children, to second-graders and travel

INSTRUCTION

TOTAL AMOUNT CUT: $19,050

WHAT WILL IT INCLUDE? John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School master classes and theater equipment; choral robes at Davidson, the Academy of Richmond County and Cross Creek High School; A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet High School computer software, engineering equipment and science lab supplies; and computers to replace Windows 98 machines.

MAINTENANCE AND FACILITIES

TOTAL AMOUNT CUT: $500,000

WHAT WILL IT INCLUDE? Most of that is natural gas, but it also includes some repairs and improvements

MATHEMATICS

TOTAL AMOUNT CUT: $20,565

WHAT WILL IT INCLUDE? Training for the state's new math curriculum and renting a room for the math competition at Fort Discovery

PUBLIC SAFETY

TOTAL AMOUNT CUT: $33,678

WHAT WILL IT INCLUDE? Eliminating hired weekday security for the transportation department and upgrades for the department's records and reports

SCIENCE AND HEALTH

TOTAL AMOUNT CUT: $15,191

WHAT WILL IT INCLUDE? Science competition at Fort Discovery, science supplies and science fair registration for local winners

SPECIAL EDUCATION

TOTAL AMOUNT CUT: $9,400

WHAT WILL IT INCLUDE? Special-education computers and alternative education services for students suspended for more than 10 days

TECHNOLOGY AND CAREER EDUCATION

TOTAL AMOUNT CUT: $8,150

WHAT WILL IT INCLUDE? Middle school vocational education supplies
