Mom caring for family needs help

A 26-year-old Augusta woman has been having financial difficulty.

Also, as a first-time mother, the stress and challenge of trying to care and provide for her 9-month-old son caused her to be depressed, she said. However, her situation didn't keep her from taking in her niece and great-niece after her sister kicked them out, she said.

"Even though it's an inconvenience, I much rather them turn my living room into a bedroom than be out on the street," she wrote. "She has no income, so I have to help her and her daughter get the things they need the best way that I can."

Assistance from The Augusta Chronicle's Empty Stocking Fund has helped families like this one for 77 years. Last year, the charity raised a record-breaking $122,000, which went to more than 1,250 families.

Contributions can be mailed to Empty Stocking Fund, P.O. Box 1928, Augusta, GA 30903-1928, or delivered to the security station in the lobby of the News Building at 725 Broad St. Donations also can be made online at Donations to The Empty Stocking Fund are tax-deductible.

The deadline to submit an application for help has passed.
