Swimming advisories lifted for Tybee Island

SAVANNAH --- The Chatham County Health Department has lifted all four swimming advisories for Tybee Island. The advisories were issued earlier this week after routine water quality tests showed a high level of enterococci bacteria, which increases the risk of gastrointestinal illness in swimmers.

Samples taken Wednesday from each location showed that the bacteria levels had dropped below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's recommended limits. No Chatham County beaches are under advisory.

ALBANY --- A jailer from southwest Georgia has been indicted on federal drug charges.

A federal grand jury in Albany indicted Brooks County jailer Kendrick Wade, of Quitman, on Wednesday. The 21-year-old Mr. Wade is charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

He says authorities took the jailer into custody after he received a kilo of cocaine from an undercover FBI agent.

Mr. Wade had been a jailer for a year. He is scheduled to make a second court appearance Dec. 12.

Plans to discredit officer get man fired

JEFFERSON --- A Jefferson police sergeant was forced to resign Thursday after officials learned he was investigating ways to discredit a fellow officer who was called to testify in the criminal case against former Police Chief Darren Glenn.

James Robert Larocque was caught on tape Nov. 17 asking a Hoschton police officer whether he had any information that would discredit or embarrass the witness, according to Jefferson Police Chief Joe Wirthman.

His resignation comes less than a week before prosecutors are scheduled to bring their criminal case against Mr. Glenn before a Jackson County grand jury again.
