With the biggest meal of the year planned for Thursday, here are some tips about how to properly use a home garbage disposal.
- Citrus and other melon rinds. Grinding a whole lemon every couple of weeks will help cut odor.
- Small amounts of fats and greases. Be sure to have the disposal operating and use a strong flow of cold water.
- Extremely fibrous material such as corn husks or artichokes can cause drain blockage. Some high-end disposers will allow grinding and disposal of these fibrous materials.
- Large amounts of fats and greases are a no-no. Allow them to solidify in a container and then toss in the trash.
- Don't use hot water when grinding food waste.
