The Augusta Aviation Commission selected the airport's finance director to be interim director of Augusta Regional Airport in a special meeting Wednesday.
The selection comes nearly three weeks after Director Buster Boshears submitted his resignation.
After going into executive session, the committee approved Tammy Strange as the interim director. Cedric Johnson, the commission chairman, said the board wanted to make a selection promptly so Ms. Strange would be able to learn from Mr. Boshears before he leaves in February. He said Ms. Strange's knowledge of the airport's finances and bond rating agencies made her a good choice.
"What we wanted to make sure is that Feb. 22 didn't arrive and we'd be like, 'Oh, we need to put someone in that position,' " Mr. Johnson said. "We wanted to be proactive rather than reactive."
Ms. Strange, who has worked as the airport's finance director for the past 31/2 years, said the position would be a challenge, but she was excited by the prospect of filling in while the commission interviews job candidates.
"We all have a great amount of respect for Buster, and we like his management style," she said.
Ms. Strange said she has not decided whether she will apply for the job.
Her pay will rise 15 percent to $86,272 during her tenure as interim director, according to Robby Burns, the director of the Augusta-Richmond County Personnel Board.
Mr. Boshears was picked as interim director in 2003 after Ken Kraemer, a former director, was fired. The commission approved Mr. Boshear's contract for full-time director about nine months later.
Also at Wednesday's meeting, the commission voted to allow Mr. Johnson to set up a search committee for the new director.
