Paine names Bradley as its new president

The search for a new president of Paine College is over.

Dr. George C. Bradley, the executive vice president at Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C., was chosen from five finalists to lead the private, church-affiliated Augusta college.

Dr. Bradley succeeds Shirley A.R. Lewis, who retired June 30 after serving 13 years as Paine's first female president. He will take office Jan. 2.

Dr. Curtis Martin has been serving as interim president.

"In choosing Dr. Bradley, the Board (of Trustees) and the search committee found him to be the right new leader for Paine College after considering the qualifications of more than 40 candidates for the presidency," the board said in a statement released Saturday night.

Dr. Bradley received his undergraduate degree in early childhood education and mathematics and his graduate degree in mathematics education from South Carolina State University, according to information provided by Paine College. He earned his doctorate in higher education and research from Iowa State University.

Dr. Bradley has held a number of positions at five universities: Webster University, S.C. State, Norfolk State University, Central Virginia Community College and Iowa State.
