Sediment drops after watering rescheduled
ATHENS - Complaints about brown drinking water are down drastically since Athens-Clarke County began spreading outdoor watering over five days a week early last month.
Before changing the outdoor watering schedule from weekends to weekdays, officials were fielding an average of 30 complaints a day about discolored tap water. The complaints dropped to 15 a day the week after the switch to two a day last week, County Manager Alan Reddish said.
In July, when Athens-Clarke instituted its Level 3 drought restrictions, the rules called for residents of houses with even-numbered addresses to water on Saturdays and odd-numbered addresses on Sundays. But the increased demand on weekends, when many factories and other big water users are closed, dislodged sediments from pipes.
Testing showed that the sediment was not harmful.
Man arrested after yelling at passersby
SAVANNAH - A man who police said was creating a disturbance in a Savannah public housing complex went on to kick out a police cruiser's rear window and spit repeatedly on the officer trying to arrest him.
It happened about 1 p.m. Saturday when Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were called to the housing complex.
When Patrolman David Leonard arrived, Gus Odom, 43, was observed yelling profanities at passersby. The officer said that Mr. Odom appeared "highly intoxicated." When Patrolman Leonard patted the man down and questioned him, Mr. Odom told him to perform a sex act, the police report said.
That's when the man was arrested.
On the way to the Chatham County jail, Mr. Odom threatened the officer and spat on him, the front dash, the front seat "and anything else he could reach," the police report said.

BRUNSWICK - An apparent robber was killed and another critically injured after they were shot in a Brunswick home invasion early Monday.
The two men kicked in the front door of the home where about a dozen people were hanging out about 1:30 a.m., Sgt. Kevin Jones said.
Witnesses said the two men drew guns but that one of the men at the house pulled out his handgun and started firing, Sgt. Jones said. One of the intruders was shot in the side and pronounced dead at the home. The other was shot in the abdomen and was taken to Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center.
Police did not release any names, but Sgt. Jones said the hospitalized 18-year-old man was in critical condition Monday morning. The hospital could not provide any further update.
