Former doctor is convicted of assault

Jerry Jackson Lee II: Former doctor is convicted of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl at his home. A sentencing hearing has not yet been set.

A former Augusta gynecologist was convicted Wednesday of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl.

The trial of Jerry Jackson Lee II, 47, of Evans, began Monday in Columbia County before Superior Court Judge J. Carlisle Overstreet.

After two days of testimony, the jury convicted Mr. Lee of aggravated sexual battery, but he was acquitted of child molestation.

"I think it is a fair and accurate verdict," said Assistant District Attorney Jeff Johnston.

Mr. Lee was arrested two years ago after he was accused of sexually abusing the 9-year-old in his home.

A sentencing hearing has not been set, but an aggravated sexual battery conviction carries as much as 20 years incarceration, with a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison, Mr. Johnston said.

"He'll be gone for 10 years," the victim's mother said after the verdict. "God is good because he is going to prison."

Mr. Lee has been held without bond in the Columbia County Detention Center since his 2005 arrest on a probation violation from Hazelhurst, Ga.

That charge involved a 2004 fraud allegation in which he was accused of acquiring a controlled substance using a revoked registration number.

Mr. Lee voluntarily surrendered his license to practice medicine in August 2003 because of allegations of drug use and a medical condition, according to the Georgia Composite State Board of Medical Examiners Web site.
