School board approves Eldridge's resignation

AIKEN - The Aiken County Board of Education approved Superintendent Dr. Linda Eldridge's resignation Tuesday.

Several board members expressed their gratitude for her willingness to work with board members over the years to raise the district's academic standards.

The board is expected to make a decision on whether to advertise her position nationally, but had not made one late Tuesday evening.

With several comparable school districts in the state already completing superintendent searches this year, the Aiken district is expected to have some difficulty finding a replacement of Dr. Eldridge's caliber.

Dr. Eldridge announced her retirement last Tuesday after leading the district for the past 12 years.

She currently has the longest tenure of any current serving superintendent in the state. Dr. Eldridge cited returning to her mother, two sons and grandchildren in Florida as the reasons for her departure. Her last day is July 1.
