Man gets house arrest

AIKEN - A 43-year-old convicted sex offender was put under house arrest Tuesday for the next five years after pleading guilty to charges that he assaulted a teen boy more than two years ago.

In exchange for a guilty plea, prosecutors dropped two of four charges against Richard Grey Mayson Jr., of the 300 block of Woldus Road in North Augusta.

He was sentenced to 10 years for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and three years for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, which was suspended to the house arrest.

He was not prosecuted on the other two charges - kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct - filed against him after allegations surfaced in October 2004 that he sexually assaulted a teen boy who worked for him.

Solicitor Barbara Morgan said she was forced to offer the plea deal because of "substantial trial issues" relating to changes in state law:

- The state's new "Romeo Clause" means Mr. Mayson could argue that he thought the teen was of age because the boy's employment records indicated he was 19.

- State law would not have allowed her to introduce into evidence Mr. Mayson's prior molestation convictions, even if he took the stand in his own defense.

She said she also worried that the boy would be traumatized at trial.

The laws, she said, have presented her and other prosecutors with "serious problems."

During his house arrest, Mr. Mayson will be monitored electronically and cannot be around anyone younger than 16, even relatives.

He can go to the doctor and to church, Ms. Morgan said, but pretty much everything else is out.

"No birthdays, no Boy Scouts, no nothing," she said.

Mr. Mayson had pleaded guilty in 1994 to multiple child molestation charges in Greenville after being extradited from Mexico, where he fled for 11 months after his arrest on those accusations.

He served nine years of a 20-year sentence for molesting 10 young boys after plying them with alcohol.

He moved to Aiken County, and in October 2004, he was arrested on the new charges of sexually assaulting a Beech Island 17-year-old at his Woldus Road home after offering him a ride.
