Tips lead police to find slaying suspect in motel

Maurice Lashaun Roscoe: Man is accused of shooting Pierce McClattie Jr. after an argument with his brother.

Police say tips from the community helped them find and arrest a 28-year-old slaying suspect Thursday afternoon at a Gordon Highway motel.

Richmond County sheriff's investigators arrested Maurice Lashaun Roscoe at the Relax Inn at about 1:15 p.m. and charged him in Tuesday night's fatal shooting of Pierce McClattie Jr., 21.

Mr. Roscoe was charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and a parole violation, according to Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Tom Johnson.

Authorities said they also recovered a 9 mm handgun.

Mr. Roscoe is accused of shooting the victim after an argument with Mr. McClattie's brother at Jennings Homes.

Police believe he followed Mr. McClattie, his girlfriend and brother to the intersection of Olive Road and Martin Luther King Boulevard, where he fired several rounds into their vehicle, according to a sheriff's office statement. Mr. McClattie was struck once in the head.

Authorities from the sheriff's office, the parole office and the FBI received information from residents in the Dogwood Terrace Housing Project and were able to track Mr. Roscoe to the Relax Inn, where he surrendered peacefully, a sheriff's statement said.

"Basically we had officers out in the area where we believed the subject was, and we received tips from the community that led us to him at the Relax Inn," Lt. Scott Peebles said.

The suspect was on parole for an aggravated assault charge, Lt. Peebles said. He is being held in the Richmond County jail without bond.
