Readers of The Augusta Chronicle will find more news about their community and their state in the newspaper beginning today as the Chronicle launches a daily edition tailored to South Carolina residents.
"South Carolina has always been important to the Chronicle," said Don Bailey, the president of the newspaper. "A quarter of our readers live across the Savannah River, so South Carolina communities are key to our business - from our news coverage to our advertising and distribution operations."
Local news, particularly from Aiken County, will be more prominent in the new South Carolina edition of the newspaper, said Dennis Sodomka, the executive editor of the Chronicle.
"We have coverage of Aiken and other communities already, but publishing a special edition of the paper for South Carolina readers will allow us to increase that content and position it more prominently," he said.
Sports fans will benefit, too, Mr. Sodomka said.
"Readers of our sports section will find more stories about the University of South Carolina, Clemson and USC Aiken," Mr. Sodomka said. "And sports news from South Carolina high schools will be placed on the front page of our sports section more often."
Businesses can purchase advertising that will only appear in the South Carolina edition, enabling them to target customers close to home, according to Mark Lane, the Chronicle's advertising director.
The Chronicle has had a bureau in Aiken County since the mid-1950s, when it opened an office on Park Avenue to be closer to activities at what is now Savannah River Site.
Today the Chronicle's South Carolina bureau is at 123 Pendleton St., in downtown Aiken. It is staffed by more than a dozen employees, including advertising, circulation and news personnel.
Because there will be more South Carolina news in the daily editions of the Chronicle, the newspaper is discontinuing the Carolina Chronicle section inserted in the paper on Wednesdays, beginning this week. The Sunday edition will continue.
