Faces of survival: Beverly Lloyd

Her background

AGE: 53

FAMILY: Sons Rafael, 30 and Ricky, 24; daughter Tiffany, 26; three grandchildren

OCCUPATION: Machine operator at Shaw Industries

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT: June 26, 2008; chemotherapy and radiation

Lloyd knew what to expect after an annual mammogram revealed she had breast cancer. Her mother is a 27-year survivor, and her niece has survived for six years.

They became part of a very strong support system for her.

"I never did think negative about it," she said. "I always tried to think positive, and that kept me going a lot."

After treatments, she watched television programs that made her laugh, and if that didn't work, her daughter, who was living with her at the time, or her grandchildren cheered her up.

"I've learned to appreciate every day," Lloyd said. "I don't let the small stuff worry me anymore."

"You've got to think positive about it," she said. "Most importantly, you've got to pray because prayer will get you through. He will definitely get you through it."
