ASU to dedicate new grand piano at annual gala

Jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon will perform at Augusta State University's annual gala.

Augusta State University’s Department of Music will honor a beloved music professor and pianist Oct. 4 with the dedication of a new grand piano during its annual Gala Concert at the school’s Maxwell Theatre.

According to the office of public relations, a Steinway Concert “D” grand piano will be dedicated in memory of Vola Jacobs, a solo artist who performed with the Chicago Symphony, the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Augusta Symphony. Jacobs, who died in May 2010, also served as an adviser for the Harry Jacobs Chamber Music Society, which is named for her late husband, a news release said.

“This piano will honor her memory,” said Angela Morgan, chairwoman of ASU’s Department of Music. “It will be a world-class concert instrument played by students, faculty, and top professionals from around the world as well as a teaching instrument used by students for decades to come as they practice for and present recitals.”

The 7:30 p.m. concert will feature composer and jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon. ASU’s Jazz, Wind, and Opera Ensembles, Choirs, Orchestra, and Glee Club will also perform, and a newly commissioned work by Gordon will be premiered, the release said.

A pre-concert reception will be held at 6 p.m. backstage at the Maxwell Theatre. Tickets for the reception and concert are $50 per person or $88 for two people for the general public. Tickets for the concert only are $30, and proceeds will go toward music scholarships for ASU students. For tickets or more information, call (706) 667-4100.
